Molten Sunset is still one of my favourite landscape paintings
Spontaneous brushstrokes, light and subtle colour……..
I really enjoyed the spontaneity of painting this small canvas where the broader brushstrokes create an even more abstract feel with bolder colours and a richly layered texture. The vibrant movement of the brushwork almost gives the piece an organic flow suggesting the light and shifting form of the landscape in a more intuitive, expressive and tactile way.
I remember painting this with my favourite music in my ears, completely absorbed in the rhythm. My brushstrokes were quite continuous, hardly washing the brush or lifting it off the canvas, which gave the work a fluid, cohesive energy. It all came together easily as the different tones and subtle colour variations in both the sky and the foreground gradually found their balance and harmony.
“As the sun slowly set the evening breeze made the light shimmer into the descent in to twilight.”
I was lucky enough to sell this painting at the ‘Wykeham Gallery’ as part of a group exhibition. As an artist you can sometimes feel thrown off course so it’s always reassuring to know you’re on the right track and that your work resonates with others.
