‘Sunrise Vista’ - 27.5 × 20.5 cms - acrylic on canvas

I always like seeing my paintings in an interior setting so I can really tell if I’m happy and whether I feel that a piece is finished. Seeing them in a room also helps me imagine how they might look in their eventual new home once they’ve been sold. I also find it interesting to test whether smaller paintings could work at a larger scale, as you can see in the examples above and below.

This painting was inspired by the North Downs as I continue my series capturing the changing light across the landscape at different times of the year. The view stretches on and on revealing more and more. Often when the mist lifts you can see a multitude of colours as the light strikes the various layers producing a rich range of shadows, forms and subtle tones.

My smaller paintings in acrylic on paper and canvas are primarily in an abstract style, though I often introduce the occasional impressionist touch.

I use much bolder and more deliberate brushstrokes to build up texture whilst still concentrating on light, colour and shadow to evoke the ethereal atmosphere of the landscape. As the layers merge I sometimes mist the surface with sprays of water to keep the paint fluid allowing further blending and subtle transitions to develop.

My smaller paintings all still retain that evocative sense of “that one moment in time” which I so enjoy trying to capture with the expansive skies, the subtle play of light and shadow, and the overall atmosphere. I then introduce finer details especially in the focal point which is often placed along the horizon to draw the eye and suggest a story beyond.

Sometimes a certain brush really throws up some interesting brushstrokes or works perfectly to achieve the blending I’m after. I’m always experimenting with different brushes and playing with colour and tones to see what surprises they bring. Each of my smaller paintings has its own journey to reach a finish. Sometimes it can take a while and other pieces come together on the first pass but it is deeply satisfying when the white of the canvas starts to disappear and the painting truly comes to life.
