Behind the artwork: original painting on paper ‘Sea Storm’

There is an unmatched intimacy and immediacy in creating an original painting on paper. With ‘Sea Storm’ I wanted to capture the fluid unpredictable energy of the ocean, using the organic texture of the paper. Painting on this surface requires a balance of control as the paint dries so quickly so you have to allow the rich layers to sometimes bleed and use sweeping brushstrokes across the page. Also you need to be quite spontaneous and watch carefully what the paint is doing and adapt. Every mark tells a story of a fast paced creative process capturing the atmosphere of coastline light.

Working on paper is a refreshing change. I tend to work faster on paper with more deliberate brushstrokes as there’s not really any room for mistakes and once it dries that’s it, unlike canvas where you have a chance to take the paint away. It has much more of an abstract feel to it and much simpler broad textured brushstrokes to create movement and atmosphere.

Although inland it was dry, the view out to sea was more turbulent with a strong wind whipping up both the clouds and the sea which swelled as it crashed in toward the coast. Although seasonally it was quite warm the feeling out to sea was cold and unforgiving and distinctly unseasonal, which then crept into the shadows on the coastline.
