Why I Painted This Large Impressionist Sunrise

There is a precise moment right before the world wakes up when the colours of the sky seem almost impossible to catch. To truly capture the vastness of the morning light I knew a smaller canvas wouldn’t cut it. On this occasion I really wanted to paint my first large painting and do my best to capture the colours, atmosphere and light of that time of day. Working on this extra large canvas forced me to work slightly differently than I usually do with a smaller canvas. There was a lot more blending of the sweeping brushstrokes and it’s definitely more impressionistic than my smaller paintings. It was good to push myself in a slightly different direction and test my technique on a large scale like this. I had to step back constantly to judge if the brushstrokes were blended together enough from a distance to see if I’ve captured the atmosphere and how our own eyes naturally perceive a hazy waking horizon.

With each painting I always have that ultimate goal to not just paint a landscape but to really capture the atmosphere and bring it indoors. Now in out modern fast paced lives we rarely get to just sit quietly and watch the day begin. By capturing those soft peachy and orange tones and cool morning shadows in this large canvas hopefully it will create a permanent window and bring that ‘one moment in time’ into your home.

I blended soft peachy tones and warm oranges to evoke the gentle heat of the sun, contrasting them against the paler blue and grey tones that anchor the sky and give it dimension. Right along the horizon line I applied details of bright luminous highlights to catch the light, drawing your eyes inward and therefore creating a focal point that would pull any room together and would easily complement neutral walls and serve as the source of colour in any interior space.

This painting is large and would make quite a statement which would suit any wall where there is room for it to breathe, above a sofa perhaps or over a mantelpiece or bed. It’s an original blended impressionist painting and the surface will subtly shift in appearance as the natural light in your home changes from morning to early evening.
