Story Behind this Painting:
‘Still Evening’ s an evocative acrylic painting on stretched canvas that was inspired by a trip to the Yorkshire Moors while researching family history. Captured in a sweeping impressionist style, the artwork moves away from strict realism which I never like to do, to focus more on the impression of a landscape and the energy and memories it creates. It leans into a moody and atmospheric feel, where deep shadows and soft, bleeding textures mirror the quiet transition from dusk to night. ‘Still Evening’ steps into that fleeting moment when the wind drops, the hills soften into silhouettes and the vast Northern sky hums with stillness that is both haunting and beautiful.
I really fell for the beautiful, rugged landscape and the rich colours of the heathers. Driving back through the Moors at the start of one evening, the light was fading through trees and gorse, with touches of reddish-brown on the distant horizon. The sky held clouds of peachy pink slowly drifting along the skyline and softer, paler clouds higher up, creating a very moody feel and a hush of stillness just before sunset, as light gently withdrew from the ground.
I used extensive blending with larger brushes to recreate the mood, giving the work a distinctly impressionistic feel that captures subtle shifts of light and shadow in the colour. This painting would suit virtually any space, as the gentle palette harmonises with a wide range of decor and introduces a calm, contemplative stillness to a home or office.
