My smaller original paintings are much more spontaneous and abstract where I let the bold brushstrokes and colour flow and just the occasional deliberate mark. Sometimes the smaller they are the more spontaneous they can be, blending a varied palette and creating light and depth, in this case with the blue and green tones in the foreground. It is interesting to paint colours that seemingly should not go together and then being surprised what you can get from doing that, such as the lime greens next to the deep ochre tones. Though they are more impressionistic in style and you can’t define exact trees and shrubs or clouds it’s all about the feeling you get from looking at it, and possibly thinking that it could be somewhere you know or a moment you recognise.
This original painting represents the core theme that flows through my entire portfolio of smaller acrylic abstract paintings which capture the fleeting beautiful light of the landscape. My artwork dances between two worlds which occasionally meet. In some pieces I let vibrant colour palettes and bold energetic brushstrokes take centre stage for a purely abstract feel and in others I lean into my impressionistic style using softly blended tones to recreate the mood of a horizon. Whilst i am always drawn to painting the colours of sunrises and sunsets I do find that blue and grey tones can be calmer and more moody, accentuating the light.
