The Story Behind ‘Gentle Showers’

This small acrylic painting on paper was painted after finishing off a larger canvas, which I often do to relax or just because I don’t like wasting paint. Sometimes it’s just to see what kind of painting I could paint with these colours and to be honest sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. With this small piece it was the sky I was concentrating on and the movement in both the sky and foreground. You do have to work a lot more quickly and with spontaneity painting on paper, especially on this handmade paper as it’s a lot more porous and dries so quickly.

I love the sweeping brushstrokes of white in the sky that blend in with the lighter blue tones and the touch of turquoise just above the horizon. Even though it’s a small painting it’s painted with very big brushes that really add to the spontaneity, texture and movement. All my small artworks are much more expressive than my larger canvases which are much more impressionistic and blended with many, many layers.
