The Magic of the Drifting Light
Have you ever watched the sky during that quiet transition when the afternoon slowly surrenders to evening? That delicate soothing moment is what inspired my latest original impressionist landscape painting, Sunlit Lustre.
This piece is all about capturing that quiet fleeting moment when the atmosphere shifts. Instead of a heavy dramatic sunset, I wanted to focus on the pure softness of the start of the ‘golden glow’. If you look closely at the upper part of the sky you can still see subtle glimpses of peachy tones blending into a lighter blue left over from earlier in the day. I used a little deliberate touch of red on the horizon and some deep burgundy tones to give the lower clouds structure, while the shadowy green foreground acts as a dark anchor that makes the entire sky feel radiant as the light moves upwards.
This acrylic on canvas has a softer, more impressionist style and generous blending, especially across the sky. I particularly like the delicate touches of pink and peach tones along the horizon and the way the light drifts upward into the clouds and open sky.
The subtle greys and varied blues add a sense of depth and atmosphere, gently enhancing the impression of sunlight breaking through. I think this is one of my favourite skies because it conveys a beautiful sense of the day and its light. It’s warm, yet retains a pleasing variation in tone with enough soft grey to keep it restrained and not overpowering, whilst the warmer peach tones lift the composition and invite an emotional response.
