Capturing the Rolling Hills: Three South Downs Impressionist Paintings

The Inspiration Behind the South Downs Series

The South Downs landscape has a completely unique energy, the sweeping hills, the dramatic shifts in light and the way the shadows stretch across the rolling valleys. This collection of three original impressionist landscape paintings was created to capture those fleeting atmospheric moments. Each canvas approach focuses on a different mood, shifting from the soft morning light to the deeper tones of evening.

‘Dew on the Down’ - 26 × 21 cm - Acrylic Impressionist Landscape

This piece is all about capturing the vibrant energy of a clear afternoon on the downs. I wanted to focus on the sharp contrast between the brown burnt carpet of foliage in the foreground and blue tones in the sky.

There’s quite a lot of texture but it’s still more impressionist than abstract, with the forms of colour giving the impression of what’s there rather than actually painting a realistic scene. I work with light and shadow and blending the brushstrokes to form structure.

The sky is more blended but concentrates on creating the hint of pink in the middle part of the sky and depth with the different tones and the movement of the clouds.

This painting captures the quiet contemplative mood of an early overcast misty morning. There was a hint of yellowish tone peeping through the clouds giving the impression of what the day might hold.

The texture is thick and expressive in some of the brushstrokes but otherwise it’s quite impressionist in style. Its leaning into more earthy tones and highlights in the clouds with a diffused soft light giving that misty feel.

Even though this painting had a previous life it was much easier to create this scene with a little bit more of under layers of texture Sometimes they just work and other times they need a little bit of time. In the end this captured the peaceful feel I wanted to achieve.

This composition embraces the wild untamed weather that often rolls across the hills. Thick and expressive brushstrokes bring a sense of movement to the heavy grey cloud cover allowing hints of bright light to shine through and highlight the dramatic texture of the land below.

The sweeping hillside created by shadows of darker blues and greens and the touch of turquoise has a beautiful sense of depth and openness. My goal was to capture the quiet stillness of an early morning as it clings to the horizon and the fleeting moment just before the sun fully wakes up the rolling countryside.
