Take a look at this beautiful impressionist painting: Evening Radiance

That perfect sunset with all those swirling dancing colours…….

Evening Radiance impressionist landscape painting by Mary Burtenshaw

‘Evening Radiance’ 102 × 76 cms Acrylic on canvas

This is a new impressionist sunset painting and one my largest, but definitely one that I enjoyed.

I love the dancing sky that you get with one of those gorgeous never ending sunsets when all the colours are emerging at different times ascending upwards with that beautiful glow on the horizon.

I also love all the stunning swirling colours with the warm tones peeping through and the pale blues of the day still hanging on in amongst the warm tones.

I built up layers and layers especially in the sky with huge DYI brushes in circular motions with the occasional spray of water so I could blend but still have the colours underneath showing through.

My larger paintings are generally a lot more blended and therefore they can take a very long time and I think I’ve become quite a perfectionist wanting the sky just right and never knowing quite when to stop.

As they take quite a long time I quite often take a break and do some smaller paintings which are much more spontaneous and get me out of a painting rut which sometimes happens with a larger painting.

I like putting a lot of texture in the focal point and lots of detail using much smaller brushes.

I hope it resonates with you and reminds you of that perfect beautiful sunset you may have seen somewhere before.
