Spellbound Evening Impressionist Landscape paintings by Mary Burtenshaw

‘Spellbound Evening’ 80 × 60 cms - Acrylic on stretched (deep) canvas

This painting is one of my larger paintings and I really enjoyed painting the glow ascending up into the clouds with just the last glimmer of the day still hanging on, and all the gorgeous beautiful warm tones appearing on the horizon and in the sky.

It’s definitely in my view very impressionistic with minimum detail and brushstrokes apart from on the horizon with the hint of white and light using smaller brushes. Its much more atmospheric with all the blending of colours.

Some of my larger canvases can take days as I think I’m a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to trying to get the effect I want with the blending of the colours and the right feel to the painting. I use minimal brushstrokes unlike my more abstract paintings where you can see quite deliberate strokes of the brushes.

‘Spellbound Spring’ - 23 x 24 cms - acrylic on canvas

There’s quite a difference between my smaller paintings and my larger canvases. I enjoy both but in different ways you can lose yourself in a larger canvas and see it slowly coming together.

It’s also nice to complete a painting fairly quickly and see it finished and that you’re happy with the end result, which to be honest is one of my main issues as like many artists I never quite know when to put the paintbrush down !!

You can see all my smaller more affordable art here.

I think I’m always drawn to a sunset because of all the beautiful tones to achieve that perfect memory or scene. Also I love to think that the viewer can visualise that one moment in time and remember that one sunset or sunrise that was unforgettable or just let it spark another unforgettable memory with a loved one.

I usually know what I’m trying to achieve but it’s a mix of getting the right atmosphere and colours and I love the light /glow that is pretty much in all my larger paintings and actually the light is a big part of all my paintings even the smallest.

You can see more larger canvases here.
