Even though this new painting is one of my smaller works I wanted to experiment with how it might look on a larger scale, and I believe it would succeed in both sizes. It often helps me to place a smaller painting in an interior setting to imagine how it would look at different sizes and in various room settings.

Occasionally that exercise reveals subtle changes in balance and gives me an indication as to how I might adapt the composition for a larger or smaller version.

This painting leans decidedly more toward abstraction than strict impressionism although it still carries the impressionist feel present in all my work, since I am not a realistic artist. What I aim to capture is often an inner feeling within the atmosphere or a particular quality of light.

From there the colours and brushstrokes evolve organically as I work and the piece gradually takes on its own journey. I find smaller paintings especially therapeutic when I’m wrestling with a much larger canvases, as I am at the moment. My current challenge with the larger works is finding ways to make them distinctly different from one another whilst retaining their emotional feel.

You can see all the colour detail I’ve put into this painting on the horizon, from the bright orange through the delicate flecks of white to the blended red tones that rise gently into the sky.
