Paintings from the North Downs at different times of the year.

Below are three different paintings each created from the same point on the North Downs but captured in different seasons. In all of them the light and the sky remained consistently gorgeous with beautiful reflections shimmering in the foreground but in different ways.

I always find it fascinating how the light changes so markedly depending on the time of day and the time of year. Sometimes the sun sits lower or higher and even occasionally struggles to pierce the clouds and those subtle shifts transform the landscape entirely.

Each of these paintings contains elements that inspire me to depict that specific scene and to capture the essence of that particular day in both abstract and impressionist ways.

“Evening Rain” is the only work painted on paper which makes it more spontaneous as you must work very quickly because the paint dries so fast.

The other two are on canvas and have a more fluid consistency allowing the brushstrokes to show through in a way I find especially appealing.

There are definitely details in each painting that I like, whether it’s the warm ochre tones shining along the horizon in ‘Rolling Shadows’ or the varying blue hues that tumble through the sky. I especially love ‘Rustic Skies’ with its delicate strokes of light blue set just above the horizon, and the subtle glimmer of light in ‘Evening Rain’ where a blended sweep of white catches the eye with the flecks of lighter green.

They’re all so different yet I feel each one has its own distinct personality and mood.

You can see more paintings on my portfolio page, where you will hopefully find your perfect piece and decide which works you would like to view first.
