A selection from a series of seasonal landscapes,

Exploring the way the clouds evolve at different times of the day……..

I often enjoy working on a series of paintings as it allows me to explore various elements from light and atmosphere to more particular features such as the shapes in the landscape, the contours of the hills, or the way light falls upon the landscape.

On this occasion the focus is the clouds. I wanted to capture their movement and underlying structure as well as the way light shines through them producing a range of tones which are sometimes subtle, sometimes surprisingly unexpected.

It’s a fascinating subject, because the scenes are constantly evolving and changing every second. You can look down at your sketchbook and try to paint what you’re seeing, then glance back up to find it changed, so you must either start again or continually adapt over and over.

The different colours created in the paintings show some days the sky was quite moody and atmospheric and others that were calm and tranquil. Whatever sort of day there was always something to paint and to explore which is the true beauty of painting.

You can see more paintings to explore on my portfolio page here or look out for my next blog.
