Continuing my abstract series of Spring paintings

I’m continuing my current early Spring series of paintings on canvas and paper which are inspired by the delicate, shifting light in the landscape at this time of year. I concentrate on the ever changing colours and the subtle movement of light and shadow, exploring these impressions through my expressive abstract style.

As the days grow longer and the fresh promise of Spring begins to emerge across the fields and hedgerows, there’s always lots to study and an ever growing collection to paint and sell. The series began as studies for larger canvases but I soon realised they stand alone as complete paintings in their own right, rather than merely preparatory studies.

I aim to capture that early Spring energy with lively, expressive brushstrokes recreating the shifting atmosphere found in the shadows along the horizon and the luminous, ever-changing light of the sky. Some of the marks have a spontaneous, improvised quality which gives the work a more abstract and evocative feel.

They are all slightly different. It could be simply the time of day or just where I’ve captured the light in the sky or the light on the horizon in a particular way.

See the ever-growing Spring Series. I’ll be updating it with new paintings soon.
