Discover this cascade of evening colour.

These are evocative landscapes painted in a semi abstract style on canvas, with a variation of colour and tone, and a fluidity of movement to create the light and atmosphere of the setting sun.

These three painting have recently been added to my ‘affordable art page’ where there’s many more to explore.

Evening Lull abstract landscape painting by Mary Burtenshaw

‘Evening Lull’

This new painting exudes an appealing, warm and inviting feel as a result of carefully chosen colours and the overall sense of calmness it conveys.

The early evening sky begins to emerge highlighted by the soft fading glimmer of the day still visible in the gentle light blue colours. In the foreground rich dark tones create a striking contrast with the lighter shades above, adding depth and balance to the composition.

A gently moving lull in the sky is enriched by an harmonious blend of colours and atmosphere, with warm peachy and deep red tones gently mingling together to create a beautiful and serene sunset.

Sunset Descent abstract sunset painting by Mary Burtenshaw

‘Sunset Descent’

This is one of my new series of early winter sunsets. I wanted to return to being spontaneous with the brushstrokes and introduce more movement into my smaller paintings like I used to, and also move away from my recent colour palette.

It has been difficult to find my rhythm again after the recent loss of my mum and I often imagine what she would say if she knew I was struggling with my painting, as she was always interested in them all, whether a larger canvas or a small study.

Even with her Alzheimer’s I was fortunate that she still asked and still remembered. I was painting this piece when quite suddenly one of her favourite songs began to play, and that moment washed over the work with a quiet, unexpected warmth.

Lingering Sundown abstract landscape painting by Mary Burtenshaw

‘Lingering Sundown’

Even though this new painting is one of my smaller works I wanted to experiment with how it might look on a larger scale, and I know it would succeed at both sizes. It often helps me to place a smaller painting in an interior setting to imagine how it would look at a different size and in various room settings.

Occasionally that reveals subtle changes in balance and gives me an indication as to how I might adapt the composition for a larger or smaller version.

This painting leans decidedly more toward abstract rather than impressionist although it still carries the impressionist feel present in all my work. I always aim to capture an inner feeling within the atmosphere and a particular quality of light.

The paintings are also part of the ARTIST SUPPORT PLEDGE. As artists we post our artwork on ‘Instagram’ for anyone to buy for no more than £220.00 plus shipping. For every £1,100.00 in sales we receive we pledge to buy another artist’s work for £220.00. Simple generosity in action.
