My small paintings are created in an abstract, quite spontaneous style using bigger brushes and bold brushstrokes to emphasise texture. The colours are vivid and varied to capture atmosphere and light, giving each work movement and vibrant energy.
Below is a range of different landscapes that demonstrate that use of larger brushes with the occasional use of much smaller brushes for finer detail.
I always aim to show a little part of my personality in each painting even in these very small works on paper and I am continually experimenting with brushstrokes and composition. It always surprises me what can be conveyed through paint whether it’s the subtle blending of colours or the texture in the smallest details that capture light and shadow. Even adding the tiniest amount of one colour to another can create multitudes of new tones and shift the mood entirely.
Small paintings on paper are one of the best ways I find to relax, especially if I’m in the middle of working on a larger canvas painting or have just finished one. There’s something genuinely enjoyable about being spontaneous with colour allowing myself to experiment freely without overthinking and to follow unexpected and interesting turns that happen with the tones, brushstrokes and colour. I tend to use ridiculously large brushes for sometimes the small size of the painting which might seem unusual, but somehow it works beautifully and brings a loose but satisfying result.
Painting on paper requires you to be quick and decisive which undoubtedly encourages a more spontaneous approach and keeps the whole process fresh. Unlike canvas where you can adjust and remove paint, paper demands a certain level of commitment to each brushstroke making the process both challenging and deeply rewarding.
