Today’s painting is ‘Blue Mist,’ a piece I’ve always loved so much that I decided to keep it for myself and hang it on my wall, ensuring it’s always there to provide inspiration whenever I need it. I think I liked it so much because everything about it just worked perfectly, especially considering it was created on paper, which required me to be very deliberate with both the colours and brushstrokes. I guess some paintings just speak to you on a deeper level, and you find you simply can’t sell them.

This one, in particular, I often find myself gazing at when I’m experiencing a creative block and other paintings aren’t coming together as I’d hoped.

I believe it’s the sky that works so beautifully in these scenes, which is exactly why I feel so deeply drawn to it every time I begin a new piece. The simplicity of the foreground, carefully composed combined with the soft, glowing light gently resting on the distant horizon creates a perfect balance that is both calming and evocative. There is just enough subtle variation in colour, along with the delicate interplay of light and shadows to make the entire scene truly captivating, especially the sweeping clouds with the light steadily creeping in. I’m particularly fond of the rich, gorgeous olive green tones that contrast so elegantly with the cool, serene blues of the sky, adding great depth and a harmonious unity to the overall composition.
