Find the perfect small painting ideal for any space
How I truly love that my artistic style is so uniquely and unmistakably distinctive—it feels genuinely like an expression of who I am.
Here are three recently finished small landscape paintings on paper, each created with a spontaneous approach typical of all my smaller works and studies, rendered in an abstract style. You can clearly observe the rich texture, varied brushstrokes, and bold use of colour, all contributing to a wonderful sense of freedom in these pieces.
Often, these paintings serve as studies for larger compositions, but more frequently, they are made simply to embrace the feeling of creative freedom—allowing me to experiment with any colour combination and express spontaneity without restriction.
‘Blazing Sunset’ (22.5 x 19 cm) is painted on carefully selected handmade paper. I choose handmade paper specifically for its rich texture, which adds depth to the artwork. Additionally, I find that this type of paper holds the paint exceptionally well, allowing for generous application without becoming overly saturated or fragile.
In all of these paintings, the beautiful, expressive brushstrokes are clearly visible. For instance, in ‘Gentle Showers,’ (22 x 19 cms) the brushstrokes in the sky are especially spontaneous and lively, capturing a sense of natural movement and atmosphere.
I love the use of the soft peachy tones in both ‘Blazing Sunset’ and ‘Molten Evening’(19.5 x 19.5 cm). It really helps to convey the impression of an early sunset with all those beautiful, warm hues blending seamlessly. Additionally, in the painting ‘Molten Evening’ the subtle use of orange detail along the horizon adds just the right amount of glow, perfectly mingling with the yellow and red tones to create a vibrant yet soothing effect.
There’s not an overwhelming amount of detail in the sky, just delicate brushstrokes of various tones that evoke the gentle transition of the oncoming sunset and all the stunning colours it brings with it.
As I’m always more drawn to the warm, glowing hues of sunrises and sunsets, it’s quite a refreshing and pleasant change to concentrate on a bright, lively daytime scene like ‘Gentle Showers.’ I really enjoyed working on this piece, especially as it captures the essence of the recent showery weather we’ve been experiencing lately.
Despite the damp and overcast skies, I found great pleasure in using a completely different colour palette, filled with those gorgeous blues, soft greys, and subtle muted tones. It’s fascinating how nearly all colours can be beautiful in their own unique way, and how their careful combination works harmoniously to convey the mood, light, and atmosphere of the scene so effectively.
