My new painting: Daybreak on the Downs
This is from my new series of paintings inspired by memories of the serene and timeless landscape of the North Downs.
‘Daybreak on the Downs’ was painted in memory of my late father, who had a deep affection for the North Downs, particularly the serene beauty of Colley Hill.
I love the way the view stretches endlessly allowing you to see for miles and where the landscape gently blurs into the soft morning sky, creating delicate, shimmering blue tones. The subtle blue tinge to the landscape offers a striking contrast to the lighter reflections cast by the drifting clouds.
At this time of year, as the freshness of Spring gradually gives way to the glow of Summer the clouds almost seem to sweep through the landscape carried by the bright, crisp air. Despite this the painting conveys a restful and peaceful mood — a moment of calm at a time of day my father would have truly cherished.
I particularly enjoy the minimal blending and expressive brushstrokes, which capture the essence and atmosphere of the vast Downs landscape in a simple yet evocative way.
I’ve started this series as working ideas for a larger canvas as I have 120 x 70 cm that I’ve had my eye on to start and thought the vastness of the North Downs would be ideal. I often do quick studies to give me an impression of how a larger painting may look.
I love the touches of turquoise and cobalt blue hue on the horizon. It was painted with quite a limited palette of paint that was left over from a larger canvas. I often use up the paint and do quick studies as I find it relaxing after painting a large canvas. It always surprises me what you can achieve with such few colours.
