There is something deeply transformative about working on a large scale canvas that measures 100 × 80 cm. The studio changes, the brushstrokes become a lot more physical and the relationship between the artist and the subject deepens. Today, I am pleased to welcome you inside the studio to share my two latest pieces. These works were inspired by a recent trip to Scotland and a desire to capture nature at its most dramatic and fleeting.

Chasing the Light: How I Painted These Two Large Impressionist Sunset Paintings
Painting at this scale requires a shift in both mindset and movement. To capture the grand, sweeping emotion of an impressionist sky, I put away my detail brushes until the last stage and reach for my large utility brushes. Acrylic paint dries quickly which demands decisive energetic strokes, but its rapid drying time also became my greatest asset for building the complex atmosphere of the these skies.
Rather than mixing all the colours on the palette I built the depth of these sunsets through a meticulous process of layering and glazing. By applying thin, translucent glazes of vibrant pigment over dried opaque underlying layers I felt the paintings began to glow from within. Each layer acts like a pane of coloured glass catching the light at different times of the day. It is a dance between patience and speed building up the history of the canvas layer by layer until the canvas matches the radiant memory of the horizon and comes alive.
