Still one of my favourite small paintings: Ochre Sunset
Would it fit on your wall?
‘Ochre Sunset’
22 x 22 cm - acrylic on canvas
This painting ‘Ochre Sunset’ is still one of my favourite abstract pieces. It came together very naturally without the extended ‘journey’ or struggle that some of my other paintings have endured. I truly enjoyed experimenting with a slightly different colour palette this time, focusing on warm pinks and rich ochres, which inspired the title.
The small yet vivid details of red, yellow, orange, and white along the horizon provide a compelling focal point that draws the eye. The bold brushstrokes of pink above the horizon act as a final flourish bringing energy and balance to the composition. The ochre tones in the sky were carefully blended to create depth and warmth and the addition of pink seamlessly pulls the entire piece together.
My Style
My style of painting can vary significantly. At times I use larger brushes with bold, sweeping brushstrokes to convey a sense of movement and energy.
Other times I opt for smaller brushes applying a delicacy of brushstrokes to establish the initial spontaneous outline, followed by more deliberate and intentional strokes that bring the abstract form to completion.
Smaller paintings such as ‘Ochre Sunset’ serve as perfect examples of this more detailed and nuanced approach.
Though the foreground remains quite dark and in shadow there are subtle strokes of grey mistily descending from the sky blending softly with the scene below.
The gentle pink hues act as a delicate link seamlessly connecting the sky and the landscape.
Flecks of white scattered across the horizon create the impression of a faint, glowing light as the evening gradually fades away. Whilst all the colours might not seem to harmonise individually when viewed separately on a palette, it becomes deeply satisfying and visually compelling when they come together in the finished painting.
This acrylic painting is a hazy Autumn sunset with delicate yellow and soft pink clouds scattered across the sky, rich and vibrant colour glowing on the distant horizon, and deep, dark shadows stretching over the lush green landscape. ‘Ochre Sunset’ beautifully captures that fleeting moment just as the sun dips below the horizon, drawing a gentle mist across the rolling landscape while the warm, earthy colours of Autumn cling stubbornly to the sky.
The clouds gradually pale into softer tones as the light fades, and the elongated shadows create a quiet, contemplative mood on the ground. This piece depicts the subdued and harmonious colours of an Autumn sunset, highlighting the changing light in the sky and the deepening shadows that stretch across the landscape.
