Story Behind this Painting
This Painting Shows Movement, Fluidity and Shadows……
This landscape painting on paper was painted in my spontaneous style as I was working on some ideas for a larger canvas. I wanted to explore the different skies you get this time of year but using blues and greys and not my usually go to warmer tones. I still wanted to get movement, fluidity of colour and shadows and light especially in the foreground. You can see the brushstrokes and the texture from the paper showing through.
I also used a lot more ochre tones to recreate the light in the foreground. To create movement in the sky I used various different tones with changes of direction when using the brushes.
Working on paper is a refreshing change. I tend to work faster on paper with more deliberate brushstrokes as there’s not really any room for mistakes and once it dries that’s it, unlike canvas where you have a chance to take the paint away. It has much more of an abstract feel to it and much simpler broad textured brushstrokes to create movement and atmosphere.
You might be able to see some swirling brushstrokes which I usually only use on my larger canvases but as this painting was on paper I had to paint quite fast especially in this current weather.
