Today’s landscape painting on paper is: ‘Cloudburst’
This painting is one of my more spontaneous and more like a study as it was painted so quickly on paper which absorbs the paint so much. I painted it on handmade paper because it gives a lot more texture and gives more of a surface like canvas or wood. It has more texture and soaks up the paint more so I didn’t use too much water which make the fibres of the paper separate and go lumpy.
It’s always nice that each painting is so different so no two are ever the same, they’re all unique. The sky is quite blended showing all the colours I used with the impression of clouds with the touch of white which I hope looks like the light peeping through the clouds. My inspiration was the South Downs as if looking out to miles and miles of beautiful countryside. The South Downs is always a stunning source of inspiration having grown up close to both the South Downs and the North Downs.
It was also sentimental as it was a source of inspiration for my Grandfather who was also an artist and who has always been an inspiration to me. I think my favourite part of this painting is the tiny orange detail just to the left of the white brushstroke on the horizon by the stroke of navy blue and also how the brown (burnt umber) blended with the blue of the sky so it pulls both the sky and foreground together.
Though I didn't put many brushstrokes and detail into the foreground and the colours are quite blended it still gives depth and shadows. The colour of the sky was a mix with the dark green of the foreground which gives that gorgeous tone. I do like experimenting with an unusual mix of colours.
