‘Blue Mist’

I believe it’s the sky that works so beautifully in these scenes, which is exactly why I feel so deeply drawn to it every time I begin a new piece. The simplicity of the foreground, carefully composed combined with the soft, glowing light gently resting on the distant horizon creates a perfect balance that is both calming and evocative.

There is just enough subtle variation in colour, along with the delicate interplay of light and shadows to make the entire scene truly captivating, especially the sweeping clouds with the light steadily creeping in.

I’m particularly fond of the rich, gorgeous olive green tones that contrast so elegantly with the cool, serene blues of the sky, adding great depth and a harmonious unity to the overall composition.

‘Evening Radiance’

This is one of my impressionist sunset paintings and one of my largest at 102 x 76 cm, but it’s definitely a piece I really enjoyed creating. I wanted to capture that dancing sky you see in those gorgeous seemingly never ending sunsets, where colours emerge at different moments and ascend upward, all crowned by a soft, luminous glow along the horizon.

I love the stunning, swirling colours with the warm tones gently peeping through, and the pale blues of the day still hanging on among those sunlit hues. I always like to achieve that perfect sky, yet no two skies are the same and they can shift so dramatically within minutes, so it feels like a never ending pursuit.

‘Morning Dawn’

I particularly like this one with the bright blue in the sky and the vivid greens in the foreground.

I often look back at older paintings to get inspiration as over the years you forget what worked and what did not but I think this one still works as it’s a combination of the brushstrokes and colour combination.

This one is pretty abstract compared to some of the paintings I am doing now.

There is a misty quality to ‘Morning Dawn’ especially on the horizon. There are minimal brushstrokes which is why I like it but the sky has some blending with the use of larger brushes. It is quite spontaneous especially the touches of white in the sky. The greens are quite luscious and they really work with the sky.

Not sure why ‘Morning Dawn’ never sold but maybe it will now.

‘Wistful Aurora’

I enjoyed painting ‘Wistful Aurora’ inspired by the glow you get from the lower light in early Autumn on distant fields.

I used larger brushstrokes for the sky especially the lighter blue. There is a lovely glow on the horizon with shadows on the hillsides and reflections of light in the foreground. This was achieved using smaller brushes for detail and then blending with larger brushes.

The sky has faint glimmers of light shining through and the touches of blue on the horizon seem to bring the land and the sky together linking light and shadow.

Brushstrokes seem to change the texture in every painting.

‘Balmy Sunset’

This painting is part of my new series of small sunset studies and is painted on wood which I have not done in a while, so it is nice to come back to it.

It came together quite quickly which is always a good thing. The colours were left over from a larger canvas completed earlier in the day.

The touches of red, orange and purple in the sky give an indication of the evening colours to come a little later. I love the touches of brighter orange and white on the horizon showing that the day has not quite given up yet.
