Seascape paintings ‘Cloudy Bay’ and ‘Surf Clouds’.

These two acrylic on paper seascapes titled ‘Cloudy Bay’ and ‘Surf Clouds’ are both from a series of seascapes on paper. Even though these two are part of series of smaller works to give me inspiration to prepare for a larger canvas, they would look perfect in the right space together or separately.

Working on paper is a refreshing change as I tend to work faster with more deliberate brushstrokes as there’s not really any room for mistakes and once it dries that’s it. With canvas you have a chance to take the paint away which has much more of an abstract feel to it and much simpler broad textured brushstrokes to create movement and atmosphere.

Both of these seascape paintings were inspired by views over the Severn Estuary after delivering some paintings to a gallery. I try and take time after delivering to a gallery as I still find the whole process quite stressful and it’s nice to take some inspiration from the surroundings as I’ve always loved photography.

In the first painting ‘Cloudy Bay’ the skies were looking back upriver in a little bend like bay in the estuary and in the second painting ‘Surf Clouds’ I was looking downriver out to sea. That’s why the skies are slightly different because one was looking out to sea and the other back to land.

The shadows and light on the landscape are quite similar with the vivid green shining through the more deep shadows in the lower foreground.

Although seasonally it was quite warm the feeling out to sea was cold and unforgiving and distinctly unseasonal, which then crept into the shadows on the coastline of the estuary.

Here are a few more seascapes painted in the same way and with the same feel and spontaneity.
