Today’s beautiful sunset painting is: Sunset Descent
Beautiful combination of warm tones and richly textured brushstrokes — a soothing, evocative piece that could beautifully complement and elevate the atmosphere of your space.
This is one of my new series of early winter sunsets that I have been working on. I wanted to return to being spontaneous with the brushstrokes and introduce more movement into my smaller paintings like I used to, and also move away from my recent colour palette.
It has been difficult to find my rhythm again after the recent loss of my mum and I often imagine what she would say if she knew I was struggling with my painting as she was always interested in them all, whether a larger canvas or a small study. Even with her Alzheimer’s I was fortunate that she still asked and still remembered.
I was painting this piece when quite suddenly one of her favourite songs began to play, and that moment washed over the work with a quiet, unexpected warmth.
I do love the colours in this painting, just lovely and warm. It still seems a familiar palette with those cosy warm tones, yet it nudges a little beyond my usual comfort zone which is always a good thing. I think the combination of pinks, burnt umbers, oranges and peachy hues work beautifully together across the sky and it conveys the gentle impression of an early, descending sunset.
If you like this painting or any of those on my website, you’ll be glad to know I donate 10% from each sale to Alzheimer’s charities. For clarity, the smaller works arrive mounted, while the larger canvases are sold unframed. I use a specialist courier for deliveries — they’re affordable and prompt.
