Rustic Breeze

21 x 22 cms - Acrylic on paper

This small quick study on paper was inspired by the North Downs in Surrey, one of my favourite places, as it holds a particular sentimental connection for me. I was working on a series of smaller studies to spark ideas for a larger canvas, a process I often use.

I focused on how the light falls and reflects in the foreground and on the subtle variations of tone in the sky. I often focus on sunsets and sunrises but this time I wanted to take a different direction and concentrate on the more nuanced light and gentle shifts that occur throughout the day, rather than emphasising the vivid colours of dawn or dusk.

It was another quite spontaneous piece and I had to work quickly because the paint dries so fast. That’s why you can see the brushstrokes much more clearly in the foreground, whereas the sky is softer and more blended.

It still retains an impressionistic style, and I hope it conveys the gentle feeling of a breezy day. I say it was inspired by the North Downs but simply imagined, it could just as easily be anywhere.
