How three sunset paintings can be so different…..

Which one is your favourite?

‘Sunlit Lustre’ is a 40 x 40 cm acrylic on canvas piece with a soft impressionist style. This painting features extensive blending, particularly in the sky, creating a gentle, tranquil atmospheric but luminous feeling that draws the viewer in.

I particularly like the delicate touch of pink and soft peachy tones on the horizon, where the light gently drifts upward into the cloudy expansive sky.

Subtle greys and soft blues add rich depth and a serene atmosphere, gently evoking the sensation of sunlight breaking through a quiet sky. This painting evolved gradually over time, gaining life and nuance until fully transformed into ‘Sunlit Lustre’.

Each of my paintings develops its own unique character. Some shine brightly from the very beginning, whilst others patiently wait for a moment of inspiration to bring them to completion.

That brief moment in time when the setting sun and descent into twilight become one.

This painting ‘Ochre Sunset’ (22 x 22 cm) an acrylic on canvas is another one of my favourite abstract pieces. It came together so effortlessly and naturally, without the usual ‘journey’ or prolonged process that some of my other paintings often require. The simplicity and spontaneity of it makes it particularly special to me.

I really enjoyed painting in a slightly different colour palette this time focusing on the delicate interplay of pinks and ochres as reflected in the title.

The small but striking details of red, yellow, orange, and white along the horizon provide a vivid and captivating focal point.

The bold, expressive brushstrokes of pink just above the horizon serve as a final flourish, adding a sense of energy that beautifully completed the painting.

‘Gilded Sunset’ is an acrylic on canvas board (20 x 20 cm). This painting, part of my new small sunset series was created in my distinctive semi-abstract style. I thoroughly enjoyed bringing this compact landscape to life and the entire process was effortless and surprisingly fast, unfolding naturally and smoothly from the initial concept all the way through to the finished piece.

The glimmer of light on the horizon, touched by orange and white strokes captures the fading night sky.

Soft blue hues are blended with rusty orange in the clouds, creating a calm, atmospheric effect. This gradual colour transition inspired me to create a larger, more detailed canvas with a similar composition.
